The Map began in 2011, when Charlotte opened the legendary Times Atlas of the World and started obsessively scanning fragments of the globe, redrawing their outlines according to her own intuition. New borders emerged, unfamiliar shapes appeared, dramatic coastlines stretched into endless landscapes. Within these chosen territories, she gathers an eclectic collection of references without hierarchy—scientific research alongside popular myths, the sacred beside the everyday, statistics alongside imagination. Vintage postcards, travel guides, rare publications, academic books, advertisements, food packaging and textiles all become sources from which she extracts symbols that capture the essence of a place. Back in the studio, this wealth of material is assembled, printed, meticulously hand-cut, and transformed into entirely new paper landscapes. Drawing from the world as we know it, Charlotte creates an imagined world that reveals it from a different perspective. Technically, each country is cut from foam board before being gradually covered with hundreds of hand-cut printed paper elements. Mounted on fine pins, these miniature fragments rise from the surface, creating layered reliefs that slowly invade the landscape and bring each territory to life.
