The Map is an interdisciplinary creative studio where paper becomes a medium for storytelling. Shaped by ideas, encounters, and collaborations, Charlotte's paper creations continuously evolve, taking on new forms and new narratives. Rooted in geography, The Map reinterprets traditional cartography in three dimensions. The world—and the countries that compose it—became the project's first field of exploration. Part sculpture, part diorama, each creation explores the notions of territory, borders, memory, and cultural heritage through delicate paper compositions.
Born in 1979, Charlotte Bourrus graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2005. Trained as a graphic designer, her work has always been influenced by migration, contemporary history, geopolitics, and travel.
A passionate admirer of books and publishing, she draws inspiration from travel guides, literature, and personal narratives as much as from maps themselves. Before dedicating herself entirely to The Map, she worked both as an independent graphic designer and as an in-house designer for Volcom and Hipanema, creating illustrations and collages for editorial and commercial projects. In 2011, collage naturally became the starting point for The Map. For the thirtieth birthday of a close friend, Charlotte created a small paper box celebrating a journey to Antarctica, filled with carefully crafted details and personal memories. That intimate gift became the first chapter of a much larger story. Today, Charlotte devotes herself entirely to The Map, which has grown into a creative studio bringing together a dedicated team. Alongside its collection of handcrafted globes, the studio develops bespoke artistic collaborations with brands, institutions, and artists, creating poetic paper worlds that celebrate places, memories, and imagination.
